I still don’t have a clue what these reviews should look like. I’m thinking of letting them be messy and random. I stumbled upon Non-Zero Day this week. It’s nothing groundbreaking but I like the memorable name.
What I don’t like is the preoccupation with consistent actions for the sake of productivity; if there’s one thing the self-help genre is notorious for, that would be its obsession with productivity and the frequent association it makes between productivity and self-worth. I much prefer non-zero days to be oriented towards living a conscious life.
To live a conscious life is to live according to our own terms. When productivity is being pushed indiscriminately as the cure to human malaise, what we get is not a prosperous humanity, but actually one of greed, dissatisfaction, and relentless hatred of oneself for the sake of yet another achievement to lord over everyone else. That’s not conscious living.
To live consciously means to acknowledge that there are times we need to hustle and work hard, other times we need to rest, have fun. And as sacrilegious as it may sound - sometimes we might choose do nothing. Zero days are not days we are not productive; they are days we do not exercise our capability to choose actions that benefit us.
My non-zero week:
- Close to finishing Module 5 of Flutter Foundations Course
- Wrote every day
- Strength trained
- Walked at least 15 minutes a day
- Had fun with Rimworld (playing the Gravship start at the moment)
- Finished Jade City and currently reading Jade War
- Still thinking about meal preps haha (next week for sure)
- Put aside some money into an emergency savings account
